On Becoming a Remarkable Blogger

A remarkable blogger is a purple cow. Even if you haven’t yet read Seth Godin’s book Purple Cow, you should immediately get it. Purple cow is unique. When you see a purple cow you know it. It is remarkable.

With millions of blogs, dare I say, cluttering the blogosphere and Web, how could you make your blog stand out?

I wish I could hand you the magic bullet. But alas, there is no such thing.

Oh, even if there is one, your chance to discover it will increase tremendously if you work hard and smart.

However, there are 2 things that come to my mind when having a conversation about this very topic a few days ago with a friend.

  1. Know your subject manner.
  2. Be yourself.

Know Your Subject Manner

As to being remarkable, perhaps there are only a few things, if not none at all, more important than knowing your subject manner.

You need it to create superb content for your blog.

You need it to get involved in meaningful discussion with your audience and other bloggers.

You need it when breaking news to make a story more interesting.

But here’s the thing. Only a few bloggers care to do what it takes to know the subject well. Most of them don’t, especially those who are into the getting rich quick scheme. Those who pollute the Web.

Getting started in this path is not hard at all. Go to your favorite bookstore — don’t wait, Amazon.com is a few seconds away — and purchase a dozen or so books in the topic area you are blogging about. Peruse them religiously.

No, that won’t make you a master in the topic, but at the very least it will move you to the top 85 percent in the industry as someone who is the know. At least theoretically for now.

Be Yourself

Knowing things doesn’t make you remarkable. It is a requirement though.

Bloggers become remarkable through their work. Just like there are many knowledgeable scientists, but only a few of them are remarkable. We know them through their work.

Going from ordinary to remarkable is not an easy task. Unless you are a clown, walking in a clown costume while blogging doesn’t make yourself humorous.

This is why you need to be yourself.

That’s how you come up with purple-cow ideas. That’s how you can represent yourself authentically.

Don’t make it needlessly harder by faking personality. The latter will be an inhibitor to your blogging success. People will believe if only it is believable.

Final Notes on Being Really Remarkable

Becoming a guru takes much more hard work, experience and persistence. It is said that to reach 70 or 85 percent is easy, but it may take 100 times more effort, even a lifetime, to reach the last 15 percent.

Finally, being a purple cow just for the sake of it is not enough. If a purple cow live in the middle of a virgin forest, does it even exist, in a business sense?

Ideas that spread win. Reaching out and spreading the words about your business is not only necessary but compulsory in this era.
