Mindset is Everything

I got a subscriber of my blogging e-course writing back to me last week. She complained that I focus too much on the mindset. Boring. Later she recommended me to stay on track on what I know best — blogging, because if she wanted a fix her mindset, she will seek in a yoga (or whatever) class that is more suitable and credible.

Well, from her email, I can sense that she was quite in desperate. I don’t know why.

Perhaps she tried a couple of things but only a handful actually worked out good. Most people want to see results quickly and label anything that doesn’t give them exactly that as fluff.

The problem that amazes me is that people feel like the need to always jump from ship to ship, even if that means throwing the baby out with the bath water.

It is understandable. Nowadays people have choices. If they dislike your course, 100 others are waiting for them. But making a jump too soon is also NOT a way to learn things.

With that said, allow me to elaborate the importance of mindset in blogging. Whether you are trying to create content, grow blog traffic or monetize your blog, mindset plays an important role.

Heck, it is everything.

When you decided to plunge into a niche, whether you are going to give up because there are a million of other bloggers or keep going is a matter of mindset.

In the morning when you’re sitting in front of the computer ready to write another blog post, your mindset determines whether you are going to create a good post or not. Even though you have to spend hours to do it, if you are in the right mindset, you feel fine with it.

You may even enjoy it most.

Others who are in the get-rich-quick scheme — make millions overnight with blog thing — are going to rush through it. Twenty minutes seem a lot. Hey, you’re not suppose to spend so much time writing. You should spend time cashing checks and playing at the beach. See?

Customer support and communication are no different. When you see your customers as your potential business evangelists, you are not going to outsource your customer service to someplace on the other side of the globe. Unless you know the quality of the service.

Mindset, i.e. mental attitude, dictates how you respond and handle problems. You will eventually stumble upon a bunch of them, no matter which venture you decide to engage in.

I spend the first half hour of my day on mindset. If nothing else, it helps shape my mood throughout the rest of the day.

Thanks for your post, Hendry. One particular mindset that drives my blogging is to always strive to put up a quality post. Since I have a photo blog, I push myself not to settle for posting less than a quality shot.

But the mindset goes further than the photo — I want to provide quality text, too. Often, long after I’ve finished modifying my main blog-post photo, I’ll slave for additional hours to come up with text that works the best with the photo.

This mindset has led to numerous pressure-filled all-nighters, I’m afraid! But I believe that it serves my readership well and is intrinsic to growing my readership base.

I guess, for me, this mindset is more about being committed to a guiding principle that I believe is worthy in itself, and which will also naturally reap benefits, if I remain true to it.

  2. This is a great post and you are entirely right. I’m not in blogging to get rich quick, but I would like a decent amount of money and I fixed in my mind that I need patience. Recently I wanted to quit and give up everything, because it hurt too bad to keep going with no money coming in and too much going out, but I changed my mindset to realize that it will come if I keep doing what I am doing. So I completely agree with this post.

@Deb Thanks for the additional insights and sharing them. There are certain more facets to mindset than what I offered above.

@Felicia As long as you keep adjusting your strategies, purging things that didn’t work and replace them with what works, there’s no reason you can’t do it.
